In the Xerpi spirit

May 2nd, 2007

Thought it would be nice to share some links with everyone and anyone. So, I whipped up a way in which Xerpi users can share one of their views with the world. I've put my public view out on http://www.xerpi.com/public/view/424. Not only is this a nice way for me to share some of my favorite spots with all, but also it is a nice showcase for Xerpi functionality. For example, you can see that I have put a friend block up on that public space -- now sharing my friend's links with the world.
So, if you are already a Xerpi user or this page has been enough for you to catch it, here is the secret hack to make this work. Don't worry, in future releases there will be a more direct and flexible way to publish the information you desire, but for now the hack is actually very usable. Simply create a new view and name it "public" (case matters). Go ahead and arrange it the way you want. You will notice as you switch between view tabs that there is an id associated with each tab (look in your browser address bar). Determine the id of your public tab and simply add it to http://www.xerpi.com/public/view/ and that is your public view.
More notes -- if you are logged into Xerpi, you can modify this page using the public url. However, don't worry, even though it may appear to users that they can modify that page, their changes are not saved. Only you can update the page.
Let me know what you think and have fun!

P.S. Some short cuts... Con Way already figured out you can just change your view name to public and have it "immediately" accessible. And, a short-cut I've been using to move links from one view to another (we are working on drag-n-drop functionality for that in the future) is to use your post-to xerpi browser button. Click on your link to open the page and then click on your post-to button and choose a block in your public view.
